Passage: Matthew 6:5-15
Description: This Sunday, we discussed how prayer is a vital, relational communication with God that is meant to align our hearts and minds with His will, rather than being a performance for others. Jesus teaches that we should avoid praying like hypocrites who put on a religious show or keep babbling to bend God to their desires; instead, we are called to pray sincerely, focusing on God as our sole audience. To help us build a deeper and more meaningful prayer life, Jesus provides a pattern often remembered through the acronym P.R.A.Y. This rhythm guides us to first Praise God for His character, Repent of our sins while extending grace to others, Ask for our daily physical and spiritual needs, and ultimately Yield our plans to His perfect will. By moving away from routine or transactional prayers and embracing this heart-centered pattern, we can take intentional steps toward a more intimate relationship with our Heavenly Father.
Discussion Questions:
Reread the scripture passage (Matthew 6:5-15). What stood out to you in these verses, or what questions do you have about what Jesus is teaching?
Jesus warns against making prayer a public performance or babbling aimlessly. Why is it so easy for our prayers to become routine, performance-driven, or like a "vending machine," and how can we protect against that mindset?
Reviewing the P.R.A.Y. acronym (Praise, Repent, Ask, Yield), which of these four elements do you tend to skip over or struggle with the most in your personal prayer life, and why?
Rating your own prayer life on a scale of 0–10, what is one practical step you can take this week to move toward a deeper, more intentional connection with God in prayer?

Passage: Matthew 6:1-4, 16-18
Description: At church on Sunday, we explored Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6 about checking our motives when practicing our faith, specifically focusing on giving and fasting. In a culture driven by social media likes and public recognition, it is easy to turn genuine acts of righteousness into a stage performance to win the approval of others. Jesus warns that those who do good deeds to be seen by people have already received their reward in full through fleeting human applause. Instead, we are called to give and fast in secret, keeping our actions private so that our focus remains entirely on God. When we serve with a pure heart and seek only an audience of One, our acts of obedience become true moments of worship, and our Heavenly Father promises to reward us eternally.
Discussion Questions:
Reread the scripture passage (Matthew 6:1-4, 16-18). What stood out to you in these verses, or what questions do you have about what Jesus is teaching?
Jesus uses the word "hypocrite," which originally referred to a stage actor wearing a mask. In what ways are we tempted to put on a "spiritual mask" or perform our faith for the approval of others rather than God?
The message challenges us with the question, "Whose applause are you living for?" How can we practically guard our hearts against pride and the constant craving for recognition in our daily lives?
This week, we were challenged to bless someone anonymously and to practice fasting in secret. Which of these next steps feels more challenging to you, and how can you implement it this week as an act of pure worship?
